What Size Jump Starter Do I Need? Amps by Engine Size, Fuel and Climate

The right jump starter size depends on three things: your engine size, whether it runs on gas or diesel, and how cold it gets where you live. Buy too small and the pack may not crank your engine on a cold morning. Buy far too big and you carry extra weight and cost you don’t need.

This guide gives you a quick sizing chart, then explains how to adjust for diesel, cold weather and battery condition.

Quick Sizing Chart

Consumer Reports’ jump-starter buying guide cites guidance from the manufacturer Lectron on peak amps by engine size:

Engine sizeTypical vehiclesSuggested peak amps
Up to 2.0L gasCompact cars, small crossoversAt least 800 to 1,200A
2.0L to 3.0L gasMid-size sedans, most SUVs1,200 to 2,000A
Over 3.0L gasV6 and V8 trucks, large SUVs2,000 to 3,000A, or more for very large engines
Diesel (any size)Diesel pickups, vansAt least 3,000A

Consumer Reports also suggests getting a pack with more peak amps than the minimum, because the car only draws the current it needs.

Step 1: Find Your Engine Size

Your engine size (displacement) is listed in liters, such as 1.5L, 2.5L or 5.3L. You can find it:

  • In your owner’s manual, under specifications
  • On a sticker or cover under the hood
  • In your registration paperwork or the original window sticker
  • On FuelEconomy.gov’s Find a Car tool, which lists the engine for most models

Step 2: Check the Pack’s Engine Rating, Not Just Peak Amps

Peak amp numbers aren’t measured the same way by every brand. A cheap pack advertising 4,000 peak amps may not outperform a well-known 2,000A pack. The more useful number is the manufacturer’s engine rating, such as “gas engines up to 6.0L and diesel up to 3.0L.”

Choose a pack whose gas or diesel rating is at least your engine size, and preferably one step above it.

Your engineLook for a pack rated for at leastExample packs (listed ratings)
4-cylinder gas, up to 2.5L4.0L to 6.0L gasNOCO Boost GB40 (6.0L gas / 3.0L diesel)
V6 gas, 3.0L to 4.0L6.0L to 8.0L gasSchumacher SL1639 (8.0L gas / 6.0L diesel)
V8 gas, 5.0L to 6.2L8.0L gas or moreTOPDON JS3000 (9L gas / 7L diesel)
Diesel, 3.0L to 6.7LDiesel rating above your engineGOOLOO GP4000 (all gas / 10L diesel)

Step 3: Add Headroom for Diesel Engines

Diesel engines have higher compression, so the starter works harder. A pack that easily starts a 5.0L gas engine may struggle with a 5.0L diesel. Always use the diesel rating, not the gas rating, for diesel vehicles.

Step 4: Add Headroom for Cold Weather

Batteries lose power in the cold, and so do jump starters. In Consumer Reports’ past testing, performance between popular jump starters was nearly identical at room temperature, but differences appeared in the cold. Its guide notes that a jump starter with about 400 to 500 cold cranking amps (CCA) should be enough for passenger cars, SUVs and pickup trucks, though not every pack lists CCA.

If you live where winters drop below freezing:

  • Go one size up from the chart
  • Keep the pack indoors overnight and bring it out when needed, if you can
  • Recharge it more often in winter

Step 5: Think About Battery Capacity

Peak amps decide whether the pack can start your engine. Capacity, listed in mAh or Wh, decides how many starts and phone charges you get before recharging. A larger capacity is useful if you want to charge devices or help other drivers, but it adds size and weight.

Special Cases

  • Motorcycles and small engines: almost any car jump starter works, but use the motorcycle or low-amp setting if the pack has one, and check your bike’s manual.
  • Hybrids and EVs: these use a 12V battery for electronics and need little cranking power. Never connect a jump starter to the high-voltage drive battery. Follow your owner’s manual.
  • Boats and RVs: check whether the engine is gas or diesel and size accordingly.
  • Completely dead batteries: a bigger pack doesn’t always help. You may need boost or override mode, which we cover in our guide on how to use a portable jump starter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 1,000 amp jump starter enough?

For most 4-cylinder and many V6 gas engines, yes, if the pack’s engine rating covers your engine. It is usually too small for large V8s and diesels.

Is a 2,000 amp jump starter enough for a truck?

Often, for gas trucks. Check the pack’s gas engine rating against your engine size, and size up for diesel or cold climates.

Can a jump starter be too big for my car?

No. The car draws only the current it needs, so a bigger pack won’t harm a small engine. It just costs more and weighs more.

What size jump starter do I need for a V8?

Look for a pack rated for at least 8.0L gas, which usually means about 2,000 to 3,000 peak amps.

What size jump starter do I need for a diesel?

Consumer Reports’ guide suggests at least 3,000 peak amps for diesels. Choose a pack whose diesel rating exceeds your engine size.

The Bottom Line

Match the jump starter’s engine rating to your engine size and fuel type, then size up for diesel or cold winters. For most cars, a 1,000 to 1,500A pack is enough. Trucks and V8s need about 2,000 to 3,000A, and diesels need 3,000A or a pack with a matching diesel rating.
